Failure
Ted Talk by Astro Teller
The Unexpected Benefit of Celebrating Failure is an interesting podcast that I believe every student and teacher should view at one point in time. It illustrates how even major companies, like Google X, have failures. He describes how by making these mistakes, you can learn from them. He says that discovering a flaw in a project does not always mean ditching the project, sometimes it could bring up the attention of something that needs to be altered in order to improve the project. He quotes, "Shifting your perspective is more powerful than being smart." This is such an important quote to live by. For many students, especially myself, when I was faced with a problem that I could not solve, I always thought I was just not smart enough to understand it, but in reality all I needed to do was shift my perspective in order to view it differently. Another idea he mentioned was how to get people to work on risky things. He mentions that in order to do this, you need to make the path of least resistance most available to them. This allows them to feel as if they can achieve their goal because they are faced with the opportunity that suits them the best. This is a skill to bring into the classroom for students who need that extra push to help their problem solving!
Sophia, I appreciate your attention to perspective and shifting-- both concepts are quite powerful. I remain curious about the "path of least resistance."
ReplyDeleteI love that quote that stood out to you, "shifting your perspective is more powerful than being smart." I didn't even notice it but it is extremely powerful
ReplyDeleteI really like your interpretation of failure and the connection to your own life. I also wrote about the fact that failure to me has historically meant that I was unintelligent, rather than just off target. Perspective is so important, and its something I think everyone needs to keep in mind.
